Applications for the ASA/AAAS Mass Media Fellowship will be accepted until January 2, 2023. Successful candidates will spend 10 weeks next summer working with journalists at a TV, radio, magazine, or newspaper putting their statistics skills to use.
The ASA’s 2022 AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellow, Jayati Sharma, applied for the mass media fellowship for an opportunity to hone her writing, journalism, and storytelling skills. She noted that, in today’s ever-divided and increasingly divergent ideological climate, “scientific storytelling remains an important but underutilized way to use humans’ inherent curiosity as a means to highlight our similarities over our differences.”
Embedded in media outlets, fellows learn how to communicate scientific topics in clear and engaging ways, better understand how the media covers science, and build a professional network of scientists and journalists. In its 45-year history, the program has supported more than 700 fellows.
