Positions: Multiple
Type of Student: Undergraduate
Deadline: February 1, 2027

The Summer Undergraduate Internship Program (SUIP) and the Summer Undergraduate Minority Research (SUMR) program at the University of Pennsylvania are accepting applications for undergraduate students to participate in summer research. Students seeking to complete a summer fellowship in biostatistics may indicate their interest in biostatistics in their application(s).

The SUIP program is designed to provide an intense research experience to students interested in graduate study in the biomedical sciences, including biostatistics. Each intern is matched with a faculty mentor from the Biomedical Graduate Studies (BGS) program at the University of Pennsylvania according to the information submitted during the application process. Interns participate in the investigator’s ongoing research and perform a specific, supervised research project related to the goals of the research group. Interns also attend research seminars and have the opportunity to meet with directors of BGS PhD programs and current students. This 10-week program runs from early June to mid-August.

Applicants may apply online at www.med.upenn.edu/idealresearch/suip.  A complete application includes an online application form, a statement of research goals and your area of interest, a community statement about engagement with Penn, two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, and a résumé/CV. All materials must be received by February 1.

The SUMR program is an initiative by the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics and the Health Care Management Department of the Wharton School to provide underrepresented minority undergraduate students, or interested others, an opportunity to explore the field of health services research. The SUMR program is open to rising undergraduate sophomores, juniors, or seniors interested in exploring the field of health services research. Program participants should have an interest in health care and strong quantitative skills. Prospective participants do not have to make a commitment in advance to attend graduate school to be accepted into the program, but an academic or research career should be something they are considering. SUMR scholars work with a Penn faculty member on a health services project, gain practical advice about graduate school opportunities, including GRE prep, and attend a health services–related research conference. The program will run for 12 weeks, from the end of May to mid-August. The application deadline is in early February. Application details may be found online.
