The ASA Transportation Statistics Interest Group is accepting submissions for its 2027 student paper competition, with entries due December 15. Four winners will receive cash awards and partial support to attend the 2027 Joint Statistical Meetings.
The competition welcomes methodological and innovative applied research in all areas of transportation statistics, including transportation safety, traffic network modeling, automated driving systems, transportation surveys, and pavement data modeling and analysis. Applicants must submit a complete manuscript.
Awards include $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, $700 for third place, and $300 for honorable mention. Winners will be notified by January 15, 2027.
Eligibility
Applicants must be undergraduate, master’s, or PhD students as of fall 2026 and hold student membership in the ASA and membership in the Transportation Statistics Interest Group. Interest group membership is free.
The student must be the paper’s first author; joint first authorship is not permitted. Previous recipients of the interest group’s student paper awards are ineligible, as are papers accepted for publication at the time of submission.
The first-place winner must submit an abstract through the official JSM abstract submission system by the deadline, register for JSM 2027, and present the work at the meeting. All winners are encouraged to attend the interest group’s business meeting at JSM to receive their awards.
The ASA’s general policy on student paper competitions also applies.
