The American Statistical Association Section on Statistical Learning and Data Science invites submissions to its student paper competition for the 2027 Joint Statistical Meetings, to be held in Chicago, Illinois, August 8–12.
Submissions should present original theoretical, methodological, or applied research relevant to statistical learning and data science. Papers that have already been accepted for publication at the time of submission are not eligible.
Competition winners will be invited to present their work in a topic-contributed session at JSM and receive a $1,000 prize and award certificate. Honorable mentions might also be awarded.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in a degree-granting institution as of December 1.
- The student must be the first author of the submitted paper; joint first authorships are not permitted.
- The paper must not have been accepted for publication at the time of submission.
- The student must be a member of SLDS.
- The student must be willing to attend JSM 2027 and present the paper if selected.
- A paper may be submitted to no more than two ASA section student paper competitions. If a student accepts an award from one section, they must notify the other section and withdraw the paper from that competition.
- Each student may submit only one paper to the SLDS student paper competition.
Application
Submit the following materials by November 15 at 11:59 ET:
- A blinded manuscript with all author-identifying information removed. The manuscript may use any standard style or format but should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages, excluding references and appendices.
- A letter from the applicant’s faculty adviser verifying the applicant’s student status. For jointly authored papers, the letter should also describe the applicant’s contribution to the work.
All materials must be in English and submitted as PDF files.
To recognize the importance of applied research in statistical learning and data science, the competition will designate at least one award and one honorable mention for applied statistics work. Applicants who wish to be considered for the applied statistics track should indicate this on the submission form.
Selection Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated by members of the SLDS Student Paper Competition Award Committee. Evaluation criteria include the following:
- Statistical novelty, innovation, and significance
- Relevance to statistical learning and data science
- Clarity and professional quality of the manuscript
Questions may be directed to the SLDS 2027 Student Paper Competition co-chairs, Ethan X. Fang and Junhui Wang.
