The Joint Statistical Meetings for Newbies: 2026 Sessions

JSM 2026 logo with the tagline "Communities in Action: Advancing Society" and a ship's wheel.

Heading to JSM for the first time can feel overwhelming. With hundreds of sessions, thousands of attendees, and an enormous program to navigate, it’s easy to wonder, “Where do I begin?”

To help you get started, STATtr@k pulled together a short list of sessions especially suited to students and early-career statisticians.

Leadership in Our Communities: Advancing Society
Sunday, August 2
2:00 p.m. – 3:50 p.m.

This panel includes leaders from academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations speaking about the impact statisticians and data scientists can have when they are in leadership positions in their communities. Panelists will offer advice for developing leadership skills, broadening leadership roles, and finding opportunities within your community.

Connecting for Impact: Social Media, Coffee Chats, and Beyond
Sunday, August 2
4:00 p.m. – 5:50 p.m.

This session looks at how students and early-career statisticians can build and use networks to create opportunities, spark collaborations, and, ultimately, contribute to the greater good. In today’s world, a lot of those connections happen through social media and online coffee chats. Most of the session will be an informal Q&A, during which speakers will respond to audience questions.

Improv and Podcasts and Blogs – Oh My! Communicating Statistics and Data Science Across Communities
Tuesday, August 4
10:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.

Successful collaborations emerge when we actively listen, connect, and build trust. The panelists in this session will share strategies for outreach, scientific communication, and community engagement, highlighting how statisticians and data scientists can foster trust, drive impact, and support statistical and data science literacy at all levels through collaborative action.

The Human Side of Statistical Leadership
Tuesday, August 4
4:00 p.m. – 5:50 p.m.

This panel discussion focuses on the growing concern of AI dependency and its potential effects on leadership and interpersonal skills from the perspectives of statisticians and data scientists. More importantly, the panel will explore possible solutions to maintain the human side of statistical leadership.

If none of these sessions fit your schedule or interests, browse the online program to see if there is one right for you. Don’t forget to introduce yourself at an event, coffee break, or reception—your next opportunity could be just a conversation away.
