The American Statistical Association has introduced a new voluntary data science certification program that includes two credentials: Data Science Professional (DSP) and Advanced Data Science Professional (AdvDSP). These designations allow data scientists to demonstrate their expertise, professionalism, and commitment to ethical practice to employers and peers.
Developed in collaboration with the Alliance for Data Science Professionals, the program establishes rigorous standards for the field. Both credentials are portfolio-based and require applicants to document their education, experience, technical competencies, and ongoing professional development.
The DSP is designed for early- to mid-career professionals with at least two years of experience, while the AdvDSP recognizes more senior practitioners with leadership responsibilities and broader organizational impact. ASA membership is required to apply and maintain certification.
For those building a career in data science, certification offers a way to stand out, validate your skills, and signal your commitment to high professional standards.
