Nurturing the Next Generation: Join the ASA Mentoring Program for Statistics and Data Science Educators

Colorful conversation bubbles connected by a thin line into one big conversation bubble

Are you a passionate educator looking to connect, grow, and give back to the statistics and data science community? Whether you’re just beginning your journey or a seasoned professional eager to share your experience, the ASA Section on Statistics and Data Science Education invites you to take part in its dynamic mentoring program for the 2025–2026 academic year.

A Proven Path to Professional Growth

Now entering its eighth year, this nine-month program is tailored to support educators in statistics and data science through meaningful mentorship. Designed with flexibility in mind, the program helps foster one-on-one relationships that can shape careers, enhance teaching practices, and deepen research engagement in statistics and data science education.

Running from August 18, 2025, through May 15, 2026, the program is structured to fit the schedules of educators. Mentor-mentee pairs typically meet once a month for about 30 minutes, with the option to adjust as needed to meet specific goals.

New for 2025, ASA and section membership is no longer needed to take part, opening doors to an even broader community of educators.

Who Should Apply?

The program is open to all educators with an interest in statistics and data science education, including those from the following:

  • K–12 schools and AP programs
  • Community colleges
  • Undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Industry and government roles

In addition, PhD students expecting to graduate during or before the 2025–2026 academic year are welcome to apply, especially if they are exploring careers in academia or education.

Roles in the Program

Mentees

Mentees are individuals seeking guidance on a variety of professional topics including the following:

  • Teaching methods and curriculum development
  • Research opportunities in statistics/data science education
  • Navigating academic and non-academic career paths
  • Job search strategies and transitions
Mentors

Mentors are experienced educators ready to share insights and foster connections. They provide mentees with teaching and scholarship guidance, career advice, and networking opportunities within the wider education community.

Not sure which role is right for you? Contact Jackie Herman for guidance.

Matching Process

Pairings are made based on shared interests, goals, and teaching or research backgrounds to ensure a meaningful and productive mentoring relationship.

How to Apply

Applications will be accepted throughout the summer, but early submissions are more likely to be matched. The priority deadline is August 8.

Previous participants are encouraged to reapply to continue their involvement.

For more information or questions about the program, email Herman.
