Nonparametric Statistics Section Seeks Student Papers for Awards

The ASA Section on Nonparametric Statistics will award prizes for the top three student papers presented during a session sponsored by the section at JSM 2021. Each winner will receive a certificate, $500 prize, and one-year section membership.

Submission Instructions

Submit a blinded and unblinded version of the manuscript, which does not have to be in publication form, by December 15.

The paper must describe the research problem, significance and background of the research, research design and/or mathematical techniques employed, results or anticipated results, and conclusions. The manuscript or research must contain statistical theory, methodology, or application classifiable as nonparametric or semiparametric, broadly interpreted.

Students should also obtain a brief note/letter from their thesis or dissertation adviser certifying they will not graduate before December 31, 2020, and that they are the primary contributor to the paper. This letter, with the adviser’s signature, can be scanned into a PDF file and submitted with the manuscript (no more than 15 double-spaced pages and in PDF format) to Li-Shan Huang.

The manuscript will be rated based on significance of the research problem, quality of exposition, and quality of execution. Winners will be determined by an awards committee appointed by the section. The committee will select six finalists and three award winners in a double-blinded process. The six finalists will be notified of their finalist status by January 15, 2021; however, a competitor can qualify to be a finalist for the award only if he/she has officially registered and submitted an abstract—which must be related to the manuscript—for JSM 2021.

In addition to the three award winners, a best presentation award winner will be selected from the finalists and receive a gift certificate. The awards, including the best presentation award, will be given at the general business meeting of the section at JSM 2021 in Seattle, Washington.

The deadline for submission of an abstract and registration for JSM 2021 is February 1, 2021.

The registered finalists will present their work in a special JSM session sponsored by the ASA Nonparametric Statistics Section.
