The Office of Biostatistics (OB) in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the US Food and Drug Administration is recognized for excellence in the application and communication of statistical science in drug regulation and development. We play a central role in promoting innovative, science-based quantitative decision-making throughout the drug development life cycle. We provide statistical leadership, expertise, and advice to foster the expeditious development of safe and effective drugs and therapeutic biologics for the American people.

We anticipate having multiple internship positions available for advanced PhD graduate students in statistics or biostatistics from May 26 through August 28, 2020, to engage in research projects on topics relevant to OB scientific needs. Interns will gain hands-on experience with regulatory research projects under the guidance of an expert OB mentor, using actual data to address real problems in a stimulating, collaborative, and supportive environment.

Past research project areas have included modeling and simulation, missing data, noninferiority trials, multiple endpoints, adaptive designs, Bayesian design and analysis methods, meta-analyses, benefit-risk analyses, subgroup analyses, biosimilars, and data-mining. Interns have been involved in the development of statistical methods, software tools, and new drug application databases for the analysis of pre-clinical and pre- and post-market clinical data.

Interns are expected to participate in the internship for 40 hours per week at our headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, with their mentor and cohort. As part of the internship program, interns will prepare a written report and give a 30-minute presentation summarizing their work.

Successful candidates must be legally eligible to work in the US. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the appropriate work authorization, if applicable. As required by current immigration law, an internship offer is contingent upon the student’s ability to provide the appropriate documentation to prove work eligibility prior to the start of the internship.

Each year, IDA hires paid student associates at its Virginia and Washington, DC, facilities to work a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer months. Attendance at the nine-week core period between June 8, 2020, and August 7, 2020, is required. An additional week either before or after the core period is required for a complete 10-week internship. In some cases, opportunities exist for associates to work a few weeks longer than the 10-week minimum.

The wage range is dependent on the field of study and years of education completed. For students living outside the area, IDA pays for one instance of round-trip travel. Associates are responsible for living expenses during the summer.

The intent is to offer exposure across projects and therapeutic areas regarding the day-to-day job of an industry statistician to demonstrate the opportunities in statistics in the pharmaceutical industry. In return for this opportunity, the intern will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

The Summer Institute for Research Education in Biostatistics (SIBS)—previously referred to as the Summer Institute in Biostatistics—sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), provides a comprehensive six- to seven-week program designed to expose undergraduate students to the exciting opportunities offered by a career in biostatistics and encourage them to pursue graduate study in the field. The term “biostatistics” is used in the broad sense, including statistical genetics, bioinformatics, and data science.

The program will be offered at six to seven sites in the summer of 2020.

Although each program will be different, all will focus on providing participants with an intensive introduction to biostatistical principles and methodologies and the essential role of biostatistics in health sciences research, including biomedical big data. Participants will enjoy instruction and lectures by recognized experts in the field; meet practicing biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and statistical geneticists and genomicists; and gain real-world experience working with data from internationally recognized studies.

The program covers tuition, housing, meals, and extracurricular activities, and participants will earn college credit that can be transferred back to their home institutions.
