The Junior Fellow Program is a unique internship experience that gives you a paid research assistantship, plus educational benefits that can expand the horizons of what you can do in your career. Junior fellows will be expected to work 40 hours a week (May 31, 2016 to August 5, 2016) on tasks associated with the development, deployment, and analysis of surveys. Each fellowship is unique and tasks vary significantly, from cognitive interviewing to data cleaning to interviewer training to imputation to data analysis. To ensure a rewarding experience for all, we attempt to match junior fellows with positions based on interest and experience.

NASS is one of two statistical agencies in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is the primary survey/data collection agency. The agency designs and conducts a variety of surveys. NASS produces six of the principal federal economic indicators, and its estimates provide basic supply information for the commodity markets. The Summer Institute for Research Education in Biostatistics (SIBS), sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), provides a comprehensive six- to seven-week program designed to expose undergraduate students to the exciting opportunities offered by a career in biostatistics and to encourage them to pursue graduate study in the field. The term “biostatistics” is used in the broad sense, including statistical genetics, bioinformatics, and data science. The program will be offered at up to six sites in the summer of 2016.
Although each individual program will be different, all will be focused on providing participants with an intensive introduction to biostatistical principles and methodologies and the essential role of biostatistics in health sciences research, including biomedical big data. Participants will enjoy instruction and lectures by recognized experts in the field; meet practicing biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and statistical geneticists and genomicists; and gain real-world experience working with data from internationally recognized studies. The program covers tuition, housing, meals, and extracurricular activities, and participants will earn college credit that can be transferred back to their home institutions.

To be considered, a candidate must be enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited institution leading to a master’s or a PhD in statistics or biostatistics. Candidates must have had a minimum of two full semesters of graduate-level statistics courses or equivalent before starting their summer internships and must be returning to school in fall 2016. Candidates must have strong statistical/methodological backgrounds, strong analytical skills, the ability to work under minimum supervision, the ability to work in a team, and excellent communication skills. Previous research experience is highly valuable, but is not required. Experience with SAS/R/STAT is highly preferred. Successful candidates will work under the supervision of faculty biostatisticians and gain practical work experience in applying statistical methods to data from clinical trials and/or research studies.
Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) is one of the largest pediatric health care centers in the nation and the only facility in Arkansas dedicated exclusively to children.
